Our lovely waterfront location provides a peaceful setting to enjoy knitting with friends, both old and new. We offer day and evening classes, including beginning knitting and crocheting, specialty classes, private appointments and scheduled drop-in help sessions. We also have special workshops with some of today's most popular and experienced teachers from around the world.

Skill Levels, Homework & Pattern Purchasing

When signing up for a class, please note the skill level required and if there is homework.
If you do not hear about homework from us, please call the shop and inquire. Homework is designated by an * after the class name. 

Novice: Never even held a pair of knitting needles? You are a novice.

Advanced Beginner: Know how to cast on and bind off, knit and purl, increase and decrease without supervision.

Intermediate: Know a variety of stitches, how to use double points, knit in the round, and mid-level shaping without supervision.

Advanced: Know lace stitches and intricate stitch patterns, Fair Isle, and how to short row without supervision.

PATTERN INFORMATION: What does “purchase at shop”, “in-store Ravelry purchase” or “obtain at Ravelry.com” all mean?

Ways to obtain patterns continue to evolve. If a pattern on the ABYC Materials List indicates it can be purchased at the shop, that’s easy. We’ll just charge you for the pattern and hand you a hard copy. 

Some Ravelry patterns allow you to pay “in-store” and then Ravelry sends it to your Ravelry account or your personal email.

There are still other Ravelry patterns you can download either free or with payment on your own. 


 NOTE: If there is a class that you would like to take but it’s not offered when you are available, please let us know. Often we get requests to add a class at a different time, day, etc. If there are enough people interested we will certainly try and do that.

Class Policy: Class fee must be paid in advance to reserve your space. Class materials must be purchased at the shop in advance of the class. Teachers reserve the right to cancel a class with less than three sign-ups or a KAL with less than five sign-ups.

Cancellation Policy: Class and workshop fees are refundable or transferable up to two weeks before the start of the class. We cannot refund or transfer after that.

Bring in any knitting or crocheting project you need help with. This is also the place to come to get started on a project. You must know basic knitting or crocheting skills to attend these sessions.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays  10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. plus
Saturdays    9 a.m. - 12 noon and Wednesday evenings  6:30 - 9:00 p.m.
Session fee: $8.

Unable to attend our usual drop-in help sessions or need more individual help? Now you can schedule a one hour private appointment with Debbie.  
Fee is $45 per hour. 

KNIT/CROCHET 101         Skill Level: Novice
Learn the basics while knitting or crocheting your first project. Then with your instructor's assistance, you will select and begin a new project of your own choosing. Knitters will then be ready for "Beyond Beginner." 
Four sessions. Class fee is $65, plus materials.

BEYOND BEGINNER      Skill Level: Beginner
Now that you’ve learned the knitting basics, you’ll want to tackle new projects. This class is designed to let you spread your wings with some assistance and guidance.

intro-to-weaving-sINTRO TO WEAVING      Skill Level: Novice
Curious about weaving? Now you can learn to weave on a Cricket rigid heddle loom right here at ABYC! Carla will teach you to set up the loom and weave a beautiful scarf using a variety of yarns. This little loom is the equivalent of a 2-harness loom, allowing you to weave items such as table runners, placemats, purses, bags and more. The skills and techniques you learn using a rigid heddle loom also transfer to other types of looms, including table and floor looms. Another great way to play with fabulous yarns.
Workshop fee is $75 plus materials and $20 loom rental fee.

weave-origLACE - WEAVE AN ORIGINAL*      Skill Level: Adv. Beg. /Intermediate
Weavers will learn several hand-controlled open or lace weave techniques. Open weaves can be used as borders, rows, or as an overall pattern. These techniques cannot be duplicated by a machine; your fabric becomes absolutely one-of-a-kind! Pre-requisite: Completion of “Intro to Weaving” at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom.
One session. Workshop fee: $40, plus materials and $20 loom rental fee

colorweaveCOLOR & WEAVE…PLAID’S LITTLE COUSIN*     Skill Level: Adv. Beg. /Intermediate
Color-and-weave is a technique that uses a sequence of light, dark and color to create a narrow plaid-like design. Varying the warping sequence and the weft order produces a lively fabric. Pre-requisite: Completion of “Intro to Weaving” at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom.
One session. Workshop fee: $65, plus materials and $20 loom rental fee

checksplaidsstripesCHECKS, PLAIDS and STRIPES, OH MY!*     Skill Level: Adv. Beg. /Intermediate
Combine color order changes and the rigid heddle’s plain weave structure for incredible design possibilities. “Oh My” is right! Explore color order changes to create checks, plaids and stripes, and then weave your scarf using one of these elements. Pre-requisite: Completion of “Intro to Weaving” at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom.
One session. Workshop fee: $65, plus materials and $20 loom rental fee

girlstshirtKNITTED T-SHIRT for CHILD or ADULT*      Skill Level: Adv. Beginner/Intermediate
This is a great “first” garment to knit for yourself or a favorite toddler. The easy T-shirt is knitted on large needles and can be adapted to a wide variety of yarns, so each one you knit can have a different look. You’ll learn to knit in the round holding two yarns together. Toddler size range is 2T to 5 year; ladies can be made in a sm/med or med/lg.

Have you always wanted to learn to knit cables? This easy scarf is a great way to learn. Select from one of several wools or wool blends for a scarf you'll be proud to give as a special gift – or wear yourself.

Candace Eisner Strick offers a fingering-weight shawl you can customize to your own color scheme and size. By following the amount of yarn required for each scallop, you can easily plan out how many colors you’d like to use. Use the available diagram to color in different color schemes to see which one you like best before you begin knitting.

TECHNIQUE CLASS: MAGIC LOOP*     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner
Fearful of double-pointed needles? Then learn the Magic Loop method to knit in the round—no matter how small the circumference of your project. You’ll be able to adapt this technique to socks, gloves, purses and more.

Be ready to greet summer solstice in this fun easy peasy face-framing hat with an open back and long fronts. All your young friends and relatives will want one so be prepared to make several. You’ll learn to seam and make tassels and can knit it up in either cotton or wool.

Sandra D. loves Fair Isle and loves to share this traditional technique that has been around for generations. In one session you’ll learn to add color designs to anything you knit.

undertheoak“UNDER THE OAK” LACE KAL     Skill Level: Adventurous Beginner
This reversible top-down triangular shawl by Jennifer Weissman is a simple knit with dramatic results. The body is ribbed cables on a bed of garter stitch. When the cables reach the edging, they open up, like the roots of a tree. Our class model is knit in The Fibre Company’s Acadia, a dk-weight yarn. Pattern is both charted and written and the size can be customized.
Two sessions. KAL fee: $20, plus materials.

In Socks 101 you’ll make your very first sock on larger size dpns with worsted weight yarn. The knitting will be fun, fast and easy and you’ll learn the basics…then you’ll be ready for all those wonderful sock patterns you’ve been admiring around the shop. Students must be comfortable knitting with dpns.

TECHNIQUE CLASS: CAST-ONS & BIND-OFFS*     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner & up
There is more than just the basic cast-on and bind-off. Different ones serve different needs. In this class Debbie will cover the basic ones, plus casting on and binding off in patterns, the Mobius cast-on, provisional cast-on and a stretchy bind-off.

TECHNIQUE CLASS: YARN LABELS & GAUGE*     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner & up
Maybe you haven’t realized how much important information can be found on the ball band of your yarn. Those words, numbers and pictures are essential when selecting and using a yarn. And just as important is understanding why gauge is crucial to your work. Debbie will explain what it all means and how you can use this information to be a better informed knitter/crocheter.

CONTINENTAL KNITTING     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner
Want to know why some European knitters knit so fast? Ever envied the speed with which Continental knitters complete a project? You, too, can learn this efficient technique for knitting and purling-- in just one class. Just think, faster to the fun!
