List of Classes - April, May, June 2018

Our lovely waterfront location provides a peaceful setting to enjoy knitting with friends, both old and new. We offer day and evening classes, including beginning knitting, crocheting, weaving and specialty classes, private appointments and scheduled drop-in help sessions. We also have special workshops with some of today's most popular and experienced teachers from around the world.

Skill Levels, Homework & Pattern Purchasing

When signing up for a class, please note the skill level required and if there is homework.
If you do not hear about homework from us, please call the shop and inquire. Homework is designated by an * after the class name. 

Novice: Never even held a pair of knitting needles? You are a novice.

Advanced Beginner: Know how to cast on and bind off, knit and purl, increase and decrease without supervision.

Intermediate: Know a variety of stitches, how to use double points, knit in the round, and mid-level shaping without supervision.

Advanced: Know lace stitches and intricate stitch patterns, Fair Isle, and how to short row without supervision.

PATTERN INFORMATION: What does “purchase at shop”, “in-store Ravelry purchase” or “obtain at Ravelry.com” all mean? If a pattern on the ABYC Materials List indicates it can be purchased at the shop, that’s easy. We’ll just charge you for the pattern and hand you a hard copy. Some Ravelry patterns allow you to pay “in-store” and then Ravelry sends it to your Ravelry account or to your personal email. There are still other Ravelry patterns that you can download either free or with payment on your own.



 NOTE: If there is a class that you would like to take but it’s not offered when you are available, please let us know. Often we get requests to add a class at a different time, day, etc. If there are enough people interested we will certainly try and do that.

Class Policy: Class fee must be paid in advance to reserve your space. Class materials must be purchased at the shop in advance of the class. Teachers reserve the right to cancel a class with less than three sign-ups or a KAL with less than five sign-ups.

Cancellation Policy: Class and workshop fees are refundable or transferable up to two weeks before the start of the class. We cannot refund or transfer after that.

intro-to-weaving-sINTRO TO WEAVING      Skill Level: Novice
Curious about weaving? Now you can learn to weave on a Cricket rigid heddle loom right here at ABYC! Carla will teach you to set up the loom and weave a beautiful scarf using a variety of yarns. This little loom is the equivalent of a 2-harness loom, allowing you to weave items such as table runners, placemats, purses, bags and more. The skills and techniques you learn using a rigid heddle loom also transfer to other types of looms, including table and floor looms. Another great way to play with fabulous yarns.
Workshop fee is $75 plus materials and $20 loom rental fee.

silkweaveWEAVING WITH SILK*     Skill Level: Adv. Beg. /Intermediate
Aaahh. Silk, the luxury yarn! Indulge yourself and weave with beautifully hand-dyed silk yarn to create a stunning shawl. It’ll become your favorite wrap for any ensemble. Pre-requisite: Completion of “Intro to Weaving” at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom independently.

unnamedAMERICAN MAID DISHTOWELS*     Skill Level: Adv. Beg. /Intermediate
Does having a favorite dishtowel seem odd to you? Just wait until you use a handwoven one. Yes, they make great gifts, but you’ll want some of your own. You’ll produce two towels in American Maid’s organic cotton. This could be the start of a beautiful relationship! Pre-requisite: Completion of “Intro to Weaving” at ABYC or equivalent. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom independently.
One session. Workshop fee: $65, plus materials and $20 loom rental fee

tablerunnerTIMELESS TABLE RUNNER*     Skill Level: Adv. Beg./Intermediate
Weave a beautiful table runner using the Log Cabin pattern – a classic design that compliments many styles and tastes. This technique uses a sequence of light, dark and color to create a narrow plaid-like design. The result is stunning! Pre-requisite: Completion of “Intro to Weaving” at ABYC or equivalent and at least one other ABYC weaving class. Must be able to warp a rigid heddle loom independently.
One session. Workshop fee: $65 plus materials and $20 loom rental fee

DROP-IN HELP with DEBBIE QUINN     Note change of day; Thursdays replace Wednesdays
Bring in any knitting or crocheting project you need help with. This is also the place to come to get started on a project. You must know basic knitting or crocheting skills to attend these sessions.
Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. plus
Saturdays 9 a.m. - 12 noon and Thursday evenings 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.
Session fee: $8.

Unable to attend our usual drop-in help sessions or need more individual help? Now you can schedule a one hour private appointment with Debbie.  
Fee is $45 per hour. 

KNIT/CROCHET: BEGINNING & BEYOND      Skill Level: Novice & Beginner
We now offer a combo class for those who want a beginning knit or crochet class, as well as for those who have completed the basic class but want to move forward with their new skills. Novices will learn the basics of knitting or crocheting with an easy first project. Those who have learned to knit or crochet can spread their wings with assistance.
Three sessions. Class fee is $65, plus materials.

Spring 18 - Posey HatPOSEY HAT *     Skill Level: Intermediate
We fell in love with the Posey hat from Yumiko Alexander’s newest e-book Modern Deco. Posey is simple but stylish, with just enough slouch to make it fun and sassy. A large lace motif on one side can be embellished with beads if you wish. Knitted in DanDoh’s Linen, this is a great pring-to- summer hat.

great-north-americaanWinter 18 Gt Amer AfghanGREAT AMERICAN/ GREAT NORTH AMERICAN AFGHAN*     Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
Select one of two afghans from Knitter’s Magazine’s popular collection that knitters have enjoyed making for several years now. The squares are designed by knitters themselves. Each fun, portable project offers a wide variety of knitting and embellishment techniques. Whether you are an advanced beginner or experienced knitter you’ll find these to be interesting and rewarding projects. A great way to hone your skills while creating an heirloom to pass down for generations to come. Available as either a day or evening class.

Spring 18 BriocheTECHNIQUE CLASS: INTRO TO BRIOCHE KNITTING*     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner & up
This is for all of you who have wanted to enter the world of squishy and comfy Brioche knitting. Mary will teach you the basics of two-color brioche and give you the skills to branch out. Just think…there may be brioche hats, scarves and even sweaters in your future!

Spring-18-Unicorn-SockUNICORN SOCK KAL*     Skill Level: Intermediate Sock
Knit them top-down or two-up…either way our Unicorn socks will bedazzle you! And what fun you’ll have watching the magical color changes as you go from mini-skein to mini-skein in Long Dog Yarn’s “fade to…” mini sets. KAL participates must know how to complete a sock independently.

TECHNIQUE CLASS: HAT IN ROUND with TWO CIRCULARS*     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner
Learn how to knit a hat using two circular needles. Once you’ve learned this technique you can make socks, baby booties or anything else in the round and not have to depend on double-pointed needles again.

Spring 18 Close to You"CLOSE TO YOU" SHAWLETTE     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner and up 
This stylish shawl is knitted from one end with gradual increases to form an asymmetrical triangle which can be worn any number of ways. The zigzag eyelet border gives it a sassy touch and makes for interesting knitting. Knit it in a gradient fade of colors and it becomes spectacular!

CONTINENTAL KNITTING     Skill Level: Adv. Beginner
Want to know why some European knitters knit so fast? Ever envied the speed with which Continental knitters complete a project? You, too, can learn this efficient technique for knitting and purling in just one class. Just think, faster to the fun!

Spring 18 KivaKIVA KAL*     Skill Level: Intermediate
The Kiva Wrap, designed by Dami Hunter as her homage to the patterns and colors of New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment. Dami knitted it in her Magpie Fibers’ Solstice so it is lightweight with the lovely bounce of merino, the breathability of cotton and the drape of silk. Frequent color changes make it an engaging and surprisingly quick knit while sections of mosaic and slipped stitch colorwork keep it interesting. Our KAL will be a fun way to “wrap” Kiva up quickly. Come join in the fun!

If you find you need to back out your knitting to fix a mistake, or maybe aren’t sure what to do, come spend a couple valuable hours learning and practicing a variety of tricks to fix your mistakes. You’ll feel empowered!

Winter 18 - Entrelac ScarfENTRELAC SCARF*     Skill Level: Adventurous Adv. Beg & up
The magic of Entrelac. Worked in two or three colors….it’s your choice. You’ll be using worsted weight yarn so your scarf will knit up quickly and you can learn the useful technique of knitting backwards. How cool is that!

Spring 18 - Magic LoopTECHNIQUE CLASS: MAGIC LOOP* Skill Level: Adv. Beginner
Fearful of double-pointed needles? Then learn the Magic Loop method to knit in the round no matter how small the circumference of your project. You’ll be able to adapt this technique to socks, gloves, purses and more.
